Greg Ligon

Senior Ministry Strategist for Lead Pastor Services

Meet Greg Ligon

Greg Ligon has served churches and leaders for over 30 years including both founding roles and executive roles in multiple organizations. He served with Leadership Network for 22 years completing his tenure there as Chief Operating Officer. Greg combines a “what’s next” spirit of innovation and a “get it done” process to his work of strategic planning with churches.

During his season at Leadership Network, Greg led pioneering work associated with the acceleration of the multisite movement, gathering the innovators and creating resources included two co-authored books – The Multi-site Church Revolution and A Multi-site Church Road Trip. He also provided executive leadership for the publishing imprints associated with Leadership Network and spearheaded strategic services for the organization.

Prior to that, Greg was the founding director of the United Methodist Campus Ministry at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, a student ministry that engaged 10% of the undergraduate student population. In addition to that, he  served as senior associate pastor at First United Methodist Church in Waco, Texas.

Greg and his wife, Susan founded Ligon Group, LLC dedicated to helping leaders and organizations “discover what’s next and create pathways to get there.” Their work in brand management and executive coaching includes authors Max Lucado and John Eldredge and the Jesus Calling brand.

Susan and Greg reside in Murphy, Texas with their two sons, Daniel and Andrew, and two cute but lazy dogs, Sadie and Ellie.

SERVICES

  • multi-site services
  • Ministry Strategy
  • Smart Succession

One of the challenges of multisite is that it adds new layers of complexity and strain on leaders that are already operating at full capacity. It’s like Jim Gaffigan describes having five children, “It’s like you are drowning and someone throws you a kid.” This is where we can help you. Rather than simply adding more tasks to everyone’s to do list or adding staff before you are ready, churches often bring in a Multisite Specialist to help them develop the key processes and systems of adding, overseeing and growing campuses. Our team can help shoulder the burden of these new tasks, and have done it multiple times before.

There are seasons in every church where a team needs to go heads down and implement a new strategy or solve a pressing problem. In a Ministry Strategy engagement, one or more of our leaders will help you uncover the right solutions for the season you’re in. They will also walk alongside to help you execute with greater speed and effectiveness. Journeys like these are highly tailored to your unique church mission, culture and people.

Succession is the intentional transition of power, authority and responsibility from one primary leader to another. In most of these cases the Senior Leader seeks to productively transition their own ministry and the life of the church to a new season. Many of these are founders, or “founder-like” in that the ministry has significantly grown over many years of ministry. The church is often ill-prepared to deal with the situation because of the size of the church. Copying another church’s process is often not the best choice for many churches. Why? Because each church has unique dynamics and cultures.
